Rounding the Corner on a Milestone

I just realized that it’s been almost six months since I’ve posted anything. Life continues at a happy, breakneck pace. We recently celebrated our 40th wedding anniversary. It was a great school year and so far, a busy, happy summer. I hardly ever miss drinking. Sure, there are the occasional twinges when I’m at a restaurant or sitting outside in the evening. But they’re few and far between.

August 18th marks five whole, continuous years of sobriety for me. My life isn’t perfect, although it’s pretty damn great. One thing I know for sure is that drinking would contribute absolutely nothing positive to it.

There are some exciting life changes on the horizon for me: it’s very likely that I’ll be retiring after the end of this coming school year. And you know what? I plan to live for a long, LONG time. And booze doesn’t have any place in a healthy lifestyle. Not for me, at least.

I’ll share more reflections in a few weeks – until then, take good care!

And remember: eff booze! It’s poison!

    I’m right behind you with 5 years alcohol free in January. The absolute best decision I’ve ever made. I show up every day as my authentic self without hiding behind my Chardonnay.

  2. I’m still in the bush leagues, at just over one year “un-sideways,” but people like you are my heroes! Your “planning to live a long life” struck a note…before quitting my daily soaking in pinot grigio, I really (and realistically) foresaw a fairly early end to my life. I accepted it as inevitable, and even (okay, this is really sad and sick) preferable to living into my 90s without my beloved bottles! Anyway, thanks for posting today, and best wishes for a blissful retirement!

    • Your comment really resonated with me. I knew, bone-deep, that my life was going to end prematurely and most likely unprettily if I didn’t quit drinking. We’re the luckiest! Thanks for the kind words, and congratulations on ONE WHOLE YEAR of sobriety!

  3. Congratulations on both your anniversaries. It will be three years sober for me 1 August, and I’ve just passed four years of retirement, which, was one of the reasons for my quitting drinking. I wasn’t living my retirement dream, and trust me, you’re going to love retirement, especially sober 💜
